Instructions for Contributors to Plant Biotechnology (2013)


I. General
  1. Plant Biotechnology is an international journal published four times a year by The Japanese Society for Plant Cell and Molecular Biology. The objective of the journal is to offer new information and knowledge about basic research and applied technology of plant tissue culture, plant molecular biology, plant cell engineering and related fields.

  2. The journal publishes English-language Reviews, Original papers, Short Communications and Notes. Manuscripts that contain novel and significant findings and information are welcome provided that the contents have not been published, or are not under consideration for publication, elsewhere.
    1. Reviews: Reviews introduce comprehensive overviews of certain topics. They should be less than 10 printed pages. Reviews are normally invited; however, authors wishing to contribute a Review may submit outline ideas to the Editorial Board.
    2. Original Papers and Short Communications: Original Papers are the normal form of publication, and should contain new and significant findings. They should be written according to the regular format (see II (1), below) and should not exceed six printed pages including Tables, Figures, and References. Short Communications should also contain new and significant findings, but are written in a different format (see II (2), below) and should not exceed four printed pages.
    3. Notes: Notes represent a preliminary report or give an account of a significant finding. They should not exceed four printed pages.

  3. Production charge. The following costs will be charged to the corresponding author. (1) Page charge: ¥5,000 per printed page. (2) Submission charge: ¥10,000 per manuscript if the corresponding author is not a member of The Japanese Society for Plant Cell and Molecular Biology. (3) Color print charge: color printing is available at the author's expense. Currently, one page costs ¥60,000. (4) Over-page charge: the author will be asked to bear the printing cost for pages that exceed the recommended page numbers: review, 10 pages; original paper, 6 pages; short communication and note, 4 pages. Currently ¥15,000 per page is charged. However if the author has difficulties to bear the expense, the society will consider to waive for these charges. Contact the editorial office at the time of manuscript submission.

  4. Manuscripts are reviewed by two referees and a handling editor. Final decisions as to whether the manuscript is to be accepted or rejected, and the order of publication of accepted papers, are made by the Editorial Board. Manuscripts which require revision will be returned to the authors with comments specifying the problems raised by the Editorial Board.

  5. Copyright: The Japanese Society for Plant Cell and Molecular Biology owns the universal copyright of all material accepted for publication in this Journal. No part of any article should be reproduced in any form without the permission of the Editorial Board.

II. Preparation of Manuscripts
  1. Category of papers
    (1) Original Papers
    The first page should include the title of the article, the authors' full names, running title, not exceeding 60 characters including spaces, and addresses, and footnotes such as present addresses of authors and abbreviations. An Abstract, not exceeding 250 words, and up to five keywords should be presented on the second page. The abstract should summarize for a broad audience the question being addressed, the approach taken, and the major findings and their significance. It should be concise (approximately 200 words), not exceeding 250 words. The remainder of the text should begin on the third page and consist of sections with the following headings: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Legends to figures, and Figures. All pages (including those for Tables, Figures, and Legends) should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page.
    (2) Short Communications and Notes
    Manuscripts should be organized following the style of Original Papers, but should not be divided into headed sections. The abstract should summarize for a broad audience the question being addressed, the approach taken, and the major findings and their significance. It should be concise (approximately 200 words).

  2. Tables
    Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each Table, with its title and any footnotes, should be presented on a separate page.

  3. Illustrations
    The number of illustrations should be limited to the minimum required to support the text. Figures (photographs, graphs, or diagrams) should be numbered consecutively. Halftone illustrations should be submitted as sharp, glossy, high-quality photographic prints. Line drawings (graphs and diagrams) should be supplied as black-and-white drawings suitable for reproduction. All Figures should be trimmed at right angles and be of a size permitting direct printing: no more than 8.6 cm across for single-column width or 17.8 cm for full-page width, and no higher than 24 cm. The publisher reserves the right to reduce the size of illustrations.
    Illustrations prepared in digital form must comply with the technical instructions for manuscripts and illustrations in electronic form, which are published in the Journal. Illustrations can be published in color only if the authors agree to bear the extra costs of reproduction and printing. (Currently one page costs ¥60,000).
    In line drawings, all lines should be of uniform thickness; letters and numbers should be of professional quality and proper dimensions (approx. 2 mm high after reproduction).
    Legends: Each illustration should be accompanied by a concise, descriptive Legend. Legends are part of the text and should be listed, after the References and any Tables, at the end of the typescript.

  4. Abbreviations and units
    SI units should be used, e.g.: mg, g, kg, m, cm, mm, l (liter), ml, s (second), min (minute), h (hour), mol-2. Use mg 1-1, not mg/l. Growth regulator concentrations should be expressed as μM or mg 1-1. If a non-standard abbreviation is used, it should be defined in full as a footnote on the title page.

  5. Literature citation
    Literature citations in the text should be by author(s) and year. When there are more than two authors, only the first should be named in the text, followed by 'et al.'
    Examples are (Bird 2002), (Cao and Jacobsen 2002), (Finnegan et al. 1996).

  6. References
    References should be listed alphabetically at the end of the text as follows:
    Single author:

    Two authors:

  7. Language and other comments
    Manuscripts should be written in clear, concise, grammatical English. Contributors whose native language is not English are strongly recommended to have their manuscript checked, before submission, by a native speaker with experience in writing scientific manuscripts in English. This will greatly facilitate reviewing, and thus publication if the content is acceptable.


III. Submission
  1. Files for review should be prepared and submitted as followed:
    (1) Prepare “Main document” as DOC file.
    (2) Prepare “Tables” as DOC or Excel files. Otherwise, include “Tables” in “Main document”.
    (3) Prepare “Figures” as TIF, JPG, or PDF files.
    (4) Submit the files at the web site:

  2. For the processing of accepted manuscripts, prepare revised files according to the handling editors and the editorial office. You will be asked to prepare figures with appropriate software (e.g. Photoshop) in TIF format, with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

  3. Galley proofs will be sent from the printer to the corresponding author. Authors are responsible for reading the first galley proof. Any changes in the content on the galley proof will be made at the author's expense.

  4. Authors can order offprint at their own expense. A price list and order form will be sent to the corresponding author with the galley proof.
